Unfinished Kitchen Cabinets An Economical Upgrade

Unfinished kitchen cabinets are bare wood cabinets that you have to finish, whether that’s paint or stain, yourself. Many people on a budget opt for unfinished kitchen cabinets when remodeling their kitchens because they save a lot of money over the already finished kitchen cabinets. Unfinished kitchen cabinets can be found at the local do-it-your-self store or lumber yard.

If you don’t have the time or patience to sand and paint your own unfinished kitchen cabinets, why not try the leader in designer cabinetry?  Merillat cabinets are designer cabinets which began in 1946 by Orville Merillat and his wife Ruth. During the war, Merillat saved nearly every penny to buy a bigger warehouse and machinery for the Adrian, Michigan location. In the beginning, they built everything from kitchen cabinets, to church pews. Today, Merillat is a leader in kitchen cabinets. Featuring three distinct designs to choose from, totaling over 50 patterns and styles, there is the Merillat Essentials, Merillat Classics and Merillat Masterpiece. Each having their own price ranges and distinctive designs to fit into any kitchen, Merillat is part of the American tradition of kitchen cabinets.

However, if your budget is screaming unfinished kitchen cabinets, painting kitchen cabinets is an economical way to restore your kitchens lackluster existence to a new, modern look. There are several items you will need when painting your kitchen cabinets. Masking tape or painters tape to make sure you don’t paint on the ceilings or floors;  rags for cleaning spills; drop cloths for collecting spills; paint can opener; paint brushes, rollers and small sponges for corners and a hat to protect your head/hair from paint. If you are removing the kitchen cabinets, then you need a screwdriver, if the cabinets are unfinished cabinets, don’t install them until you have them painted, and before painting them, you will need sandpaper to smooth out the rough spots. However, if you are painting existing, hanging kitchen cabinets, and leave them hang, but use the tape to keep paint off the surrounding walls and cabinets you are not painting.

Besides unfinished kitchen cabinets, another option to remodeling your kitchen without a lot of cash would be to use kitchen cabinet refacing. This is a procedure in which the fronts of the cabinets and not the entire cabinets are redone. They can be painted, or buffed out and stained. Whatever your choice is, the original cabinets remain the same and only work is done on the cabinet doors.

Besides purchasing unfinished kitchen cabinets and painting them yourself, you could buy kitchen cabinets direct from a kitchen cabinet manufacturer. The manufacturers is the factory where they make the kitchen cabinets and there are several in every state. Some are willing to sell you unfinished kitchen cabinets while others have sales throughout the year to rid their inventory of overstocks and kitchen cabinets that custom homebuilders purchased and could not use. You can purchase these for pennies on the dollar!
